Clogs - Drain Openers aren't Created Equal There are three major options for clearing a clogged drain:
Chemical Drain Openers
  • These include liquid and granular lye's and liquid acids, such as sulphuric acid. The safer drain cleaners use non-caustic ingredients (copper sulphide or sodium hydroxide-based). These are available for consumer purchase but they are not considered to be very effective.
  • The chemicals react strongly with water, creating heat as it dissolves and becomes diluted. This reaction helps soften grease blockages within a pipe or trap.
  • The cleaner also reacts with and dissolves organic materials. Lye reacts with grease to make soap, which is water-soluble.
  • Many experts only recommend trying chemical cleaner only if all other methods have not worked.
  • Chemical drain openers should never be used in toilets or dishwashers
Natural Drain Openers
  • Baking soda and vinegar - empty a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one-half cup white vinegar. Cover the drain and let mixture stand for a few minutes. Then pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. The baking soda and vinegar dissolve fatty acids, allowing the clog to wash down the drain.
  • Plunger - make plunger more effective by blocking the overflow holes, other drains in adjacent sink, or any other openings by stuffing wet rags into the holes. Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly to the rim of the plunger; this helps create a tighter seal.
  • Pressurized Openers - small, hand-held devices shoot pressurized air down into drain.
  • Open the Trap - disconnect the u-shaped pipe under the sink (have a bucket handy) and clean it out.
  • Sewer Snake - If the trap is clear and the drain is still clogged, the blockage is further down drainpipe or the main drain. Call Emergency Response Plumbing Services.
