The Healthy Home TMSummer 2003ArchivedHelping Create a Better Environment For Your Family
During the summer months, water usage is at its peak with homeowners watering lawns and doing yard work. To save water outdoors, deep soak your lawn. Water infrequently, but thoroughly so that moisture soaks down to the roots, about four to six inches. This encourages deeper, healthier root systems and allows the lawn to go without water for a longer time. Water during the cool of the day to late evening, early morning. This helps reduce the amount of water that might be wasted through evaporation. Weeds are water thieves and will rob your plants of water and nutrients. If you have a vegetable garden, letting water sit on it all night can be dangerous because it promotes disease. It's best to water your vegetable garden in the early morning hours so the sunlight can evaporate the water off the foliage. Another way to prevent excessive evaporation during the summer months is to mulch vegetable and flower gardens. Shredded pine bark, leaves or newspaper can be used as organic mulch. The key is to get a barrier between the soil and the atmosphere so that we prevent that loss of water. Drip irrigation is the most effective way to water a vegetable or flower garden or shrub bed. Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting and mow more frequently. Longer grass blades provide shade and help hold moisture in longer. Position sprinklers so water does not land in the gutters or on any paved roads. Use a broom, not a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks. heck for leaks in pipes, hoses, faucets, and couplings. Leaks can waste a lot of water.

Summertime barbecues are fun and delicious. Some of our greatest memories are made around a grill with friends and family. So, make each cookout even safer and healthier by reducing flare-up while grilling. As you cook meats the grease from fat and any oils used for marinating, drips onto the hot coals or burner. Dripping grease and oils bum and produce smoke. This smoke contains cancer causing agents called carcinogens. Smoking grills caused from fla.re-up are a health hazard because carcinogens incase the meats that you eat.
To reduce the occurrences of flare-up:
- Use meats that are lean or have the excess fat cut away.
- Flip meat carefully with tongs to avoid puncturing it.
- Adjust the cooking surface to the highest possible postition.
- Partially cook meats prior to grilling to minimize the grilling time.

The modem bathroom may be convenient, but it's no friend to the environment. In fact, the toilets, showers, sinks, lights and just about every other fixture found in the typical powder room are little more than drains for untold amounts of water, energy and money. Consider this: In one month a single leaky toilet can waste as much as 750 gallons of water. A bad faucet might squander an additional 300 gallons. Conventional showers account for more than a fifth of all household water use. What can be done? If you're designing a bathroom, low-flush toilets, low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators should be standard in any environmentally friendly bathroom. For starters, take a look at your toilet. Federal regulations require modem toilets to function on 1.6 gallons per flush or less. If yours uses ore, it's time for an upgrade. But don't go out and buy the first low-flush toilet you find. To go down to 1.6 requires engineering. Some manufacturers have done the engineering, but others have not. Some work, some don't. You'll have to do the homework, because a bad performer will leave you holding your nose. The shower's next ... Showerheads once spouted anywhere from six to eight gallons of water every minute--but today there are many models that work fine on much less. Some contain a device that intensifies water delivery at pressures as low as three pounds per square inch. The result? An excellent shower requiring as little as 1.4 gallons of water per minute. An even quicker fix for both shower and sink can be accomplished by installing inexpensive faucet aerators, available at local hardware stores. Aerators add air to the water to provide the same pressure with less flow, and often include a switch that adjusts flow from full-power to a mere trickle while maintaining the already established hot-cold mix. Of course, as the water pours, it's a good idea to keep tabs on what's in it. A person takes in more chlorine during a 15-minute shower than by drinking eight glasses of water a day. You can remove over 90 percent of the chemical with a filter and by using a low-flow showerhead that has an on-off switch. You'll save enough energy to pay for itself in six months. For the sink, try a faucet filtration system guaranteed to remove lead, pesticides and other contaminants. To soften water, get a system that is chemical and salt-free and uses an induction field, which also removes mineral build-up and extends appliance life.

The average household plumbing system represents an investment of about fifteen percent of the value of the house. No part of the house is more important. Nothing in the house is used more often. A smoothly functioning plumbing system is essential to health and adds to the convenience of modem living. There are many things that an owner or renter can do; there are many things that should be left to an expert -the plumbing contractor and his staff of journeymen plumbers. Minor repairs should be made promptly. Such annoyances such as a clogged drain, dripping faucet or a leaking flush valve in the toilet are more than a mere bother - they usually waste money.
Major repairs, replacements, and new plumbing installations should be left to the supervision of a plumbing contractor. His working methods are based on years of experience - and his guarantee is assurance that all materials and methods are of the highest quality.

A Charlotte, NC man having purchased a case of very rare, very expensive cigars, insured them against fire among other
things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of cigars and without having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the man filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the man stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The man sued and won. In delivering the ruling the judge, agreeing that the claim was frivolous, stated nevertheless that the man held a policy from the company in which it hadwarranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure against fire, without defining what it considered to be "unacceptable fire," and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid the man $15,000 for the rare cigars he lost in "the fires." After the man cashed the check, however, the company had him arrested on 24 counts of arson. With his own insurance claim
and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the man was convicted of intentionally burning his insured
property and sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

Many homeowners wait until their water heater fails before shopping for a replacement. They are often unable to take the time to shop for the most energy-efficient unit for their specific needs. This is unfortunate because the cost of purchasing and operating a water heater can vary greatly depending on the type, brand, and model selected and on the quality of the installation. To avoid this scenario, you might want to do some research now before you are faced with an emergency purchase. Familiarize yourself today with the options that will allow you to make an informed decision when the need to buy a new water heater arises. Within the last few years, a variety of water heaters have become available to consumers. The following types of water heaters are now on the market: conventional storage, demand, heat pump, tankless coil, indirect, and solar. It is also possible to purchase water heaters that can be connected to your home's space-heating system. As with any purchase, balance the pros and cons of the different water heaters in light of your particular needs. There are numerous factors to consider when choosing a new water heater. One factor uppermost in many consumers' minds is cost, which encompasses purchase price and lifetime maintenance and operation expenses. When choosing among different models, it is wise to analyze the life-cycle cost -- the total of all costs and benefits associated with a purchase during its estimated lifetime.

Today, kitchen sink bowls come in many different materials. Although enameled cast iron remains an attractive and durable product, many people today are choosing bowls made of stainless steel and other solid surface materials for their added durability and stain resistance. Bowls are available in Corian, Moenstone, Swanstone, Surrell, and others. The important thing to remember is to follow the manufacturer's instructions pertaining to the material of which your bowl is constructed. With some of the solid surface materials, scratches can be removed when lightly sanded because the color goes throughout the thickness of the material. To prolong the life and appearance of enameled cast iron sinks, clean the bowl immediately after use. Use a non-abrasive cleaner. Constant use of abrasive cleaners can eventually wear the finish
down, making it much more porous and susceptible to stains. This can also happen with enameled, cast iron tubs over a long period. Don't allow fruit or vegetable juices or cleaning acids to stand on surface. An acid-resisting sink will safely resist lemon, orange, and other citrus fruit juices, tomato juice, mayonnaise, and other vinegar preparations if these are not permitted to remain more than a few hours. A regular enamel finish is not impervious to acids. Teas and coffee grounds will also stain enameled surfaces, if allowed to remain very long. Photographic solutions are even more harmful to enamel, and the amateur photographer should not be allowed to use the sink because a fixture once damaged in this way can never be corrected. When cleaning the sink, use hot water and soap. Water and soap are not as hard on the enameled
finish as strong cleaning solutions like washing soda or a gritty abrasive. If a cleaner is used, it should be one that specifically states that it is non-abrasive.
